In an era where digital security is paramount, the recent collapse of
Knights of Old, a 158-year-old UK-based transportation company, serves
as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that even the most
established businesses face. The company was forced to shut down after a
devastating ransomware attack, which resulted in the loss of 700 jobs
and the grounding of 500 trucks. This incident highlights the critical
importance of robust cybersecurity measures and the potential
consequences of neglecting them.
The attack on Knights of Old was orchestrated by a cybercriminal
group known as ‘Akira’. The hackers gained access to the company’s
systems through a weak password used by an employee. This password was
so easily guessed that it became the entry point for the attackers to
encrypt and lock the company’s operational data. The ransom demand was
reportedly as high as Β£5 million ($6.74 million), a sum that the company
could not afford.
Despite having cyberattack insurance, the company’s efforts to
recover were thwarted. Solace Global, the insurance provider, dispatched
a “cybercrisis” team to assist. However, they found that all of Knights
of Old’s data had been encrypted, and their servers, backups, and
disaster recovery systems were destroyed. This left the company with no
choice but to cease operations, marking a tragic end to its
long-standing history.
This incident is not isolated. Ransomware attacks have become
increasingly common, with demands often reaching millions of pounds. The
UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is actively working to make
the country a safer place for online activities, but the threat of
ransomware remains a significant challenge.
The collapse of Knights of Old underscores the necessity of strong
cybersecurity practices. Companies must prioritize regular independent
cyber-audits to ensure they meet minimum security standards.
Additionally, there is a growing call for legislation that would ban
public bodies from paying ransoms and require private companies to
report such incidents to the government.
The downfall of Knights of Old is a sobering example of how a single
weak link in cybersecurity can lead to catastrophic consequences. As
businesses continue to navigate the digital landscape, it is imperative
that they invest in comprehensive security measures to protect their
assets and ensure their longevity.
